Good question, Dominic. I think that the idea of "congregational study" would need modification - into a broader study of the needs and spiritual aspirations within the larger culture (of the itinerant or academic preacher), but the same longer term issue remains - i.e. what needs to be communicated in this generation, for these listeners, with these issues. An academic might understand this in a kind of "curricular" way. An itinerant might understand this in terms of one's core message or ongoing "sound bytes" as one goes from place to place. In other words, I think that the contextual dimensions of preaching, no matter what the context, encourage us to think strategically or "long-term" about the messages we favor.

Thank you for this interesting perspective. I'm wondering, however, whether this approach as such is suitable for those preachers whose preaching is not grounded or principally directed towards a stable community. That is, this approach seems to suppose or even privilege a preacher whose preaching is from the context of a (relatively) stable congregation. How might this approach be of use to those of us who preach to quite fluid congregations, e.g. in academic settings or itinerant preaching?

I liked this, John — it suits a listener to think that the preacher is thinking long-range like that.
